There are many things that happen in our lives that direct us to our final position in life. When I was young it became apparent that I was not able to hold my head erect. As I grew the muscle on the left side of my neck did not causing my spine to develop a "S" curve. Why this happened is not certain. It could have been from a birth injury. I was born at my grandmother’s home, and she delivered me. It could have been from me falling out of our car at 60 mph. By the time I was 15 it had become all that I could bare. We had no medical insurance and no means to pay for surgery to correct my wry neck. I spoke with my MD Dr Benjamin White. He contacted the Kansas Crippled Children's Society and arranged for me to have surgery to cut the muscle on the left side of my neck so I could hold my head erect.
After the surgery I began having back pain because while I could hold my head straighter my spine was now out of balance. I then began seeing Dr Jack Dickson, D.C. and he quickly was able to help to straighten my entire spine. He said that he wished that he had been able to treat me prior to the surgery and that I might not have needed surgery to correct my wry neck. I agree.
At age 16 I looked into going to Chiropractic College. Life got in the way, and I did not pursue that at that time. When I was 32, I told Dr. Guy Counselman, D.C. that I had always wanted to be a Chiropractor. He said "Doug, the day you retire you will hate yourself if you don't do the one thing you always wanted to do." Dr Counselman had two passions. He loved being a Chiropractor and he loved being a pilot. Two months later my best friend Steve Dickson who was the son of Dr Dickson called me to let me know that Dr Counselman had been killed in a plane crash. I hung up the phone and turned to my wife and said, "Dr Counselman has been killed in a plane crash and I am going to Chiropractic College". I was not going to go to my grave without pursuing my passion.
While I was in college my friend Steve Dickson who was the Attorney for the Kansas Chiropractic Society was killed in a plane crash with Dr Stanley Heard, a friend of President Bill Clinton.
My dog Dickson is named in honor of Dr Jack Dickson and Steve Dickson.
